Food safety and wellbeing

Barnsley catering service complies with all core responsibilities in relation to the safety and wellbeing of our customers and our employees.

We're committed to making sure that we provide safe and enjoyable meals to to all our customers - paying pupils, those who receive free school meals, school staff and visitors.  We're equally committed to providing safe working environments for our employees.

Food safety management system

To ensure compliance with food hygiene regulations, our system is based on the Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points (HACCP) principles and is regularly audited.

The system examines each step in the production of meals, from the selection of suppliers, through to the finished meal and cleanliness of the kitchen premises. This helps us identify any hazards and introduce control measures to eliminate them. Regular internal audits are carried out to ensure compliance with the system.

Food safety

This is of the utmost importance to our service and we train our staff accordingly. All our staff complete food safety training and we offer progressive qualifications in food safety, health and safety and nutrition.

The service is a registered training centre with the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH), Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance (HABC) and City and Guilds, which means we can offer courses to teaching and non-teaching assistants, especially if they're involved with any food preparation or serving. We also offer pupil hand hygiene workshops.

Training for school support staff

We offer ‘Hand in Hand’ training to school support staff, which combines food safety and healthy eating. 


All our menus comply with the government's School Food Standards 2015, as outlined in standards for school lunches and are routinely checked against the standards. We use quality ingredients for all our recipes and they're all low in salt, sugar and fat. The daily menus include fresh fruit and vegetables, and salad is offered in addition to the meal selection.

Health and safety

We use the council's health and safety management system to make sure we're compliant with current health and safety legislation and best practice, which includes risk assessment and in-depth health and safety monitoring of each site.

The service is accredited by the Contractors Health and Safety Approval Scheme (CHAS).
